Lent isn’t just an occasion where you have to give up something; it's more than that. Lent is a time where you should go out and do something for others. You could go the extra mile and pay for someone's coffee, or even just give them a compliment. We do this, not because we are sacrificing something but we are following the way of Jesus.
One idea of helping out and contributing to society is by maybe when you are doing your shopping in Tesco and you see someone struggling; help them rather than just being an onlooker. Have you ever thought that driving your car actually affects the earth? So instead walk to work rather than just hopping in your car and reduce your carbon footprint. Lent isn't just about what we can give up but what we can contribute. Written by Robert Coward, Year 10

Ash Wednesday and Shrove Tuesday have just passed in the church's liturgical calendar, this marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is a time of resisting temptation and giving something up which is specifically important to you; this is to represent Jesus’ suffering that he faced in the desert. So, what are you going to give up for this Lent?
Not only did Jesus suffer in the desert but he resisted temptation. This is a prominent topic in our day to day lives, as peer pressure is a strife in our world now. Many children today think it's morally right to bully one another over the internet and do not think of the repercussions. Just because they might say it over a different medium doesn't mean it will hurt any less. As Jesus taught us, we must love one another, when this is achieved the world we will live in harmony again. To resist such peer pressure is showing that you have faith within Jesus and you are a powerful person; just by saying no you can achieve this. Written by Jonathan Wigington, year 10 |
